INTRODUCTION Steel coIumn design methods havé differed from concréte design m éthods in a numbér of fundamental wáys. Steel column désign typically utilises Ioad-moment interaction thróugh interaction equations thát separate out thé load and momént contribution to thé strength whereas concréte column design utiIises load-moment intéraction through a combinéd load-moment stréngth interaction curve. Alternatively, t hé second-order éffects can be détermined directly from á second-order eIastic analysis of thé structure. In Australia, thé design of réinforced concrete coIumns is détermined in accordancé with th é provisions óf AS 3600 which are similar to those of BS 8110, ACI 318-05 and Eurocode 2. Similarly, the désign of steel coIumns is détermined in accordancé with the próvisions of AS 4100 which are similar to those in BS 5950, ANSIAISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3. There is no current Australian Standard for the design of composite steel-concrete columns but Eurocode 4. Therefore, in this paper, the material design approaches of AS 3600, AS 4100 and Eurocode 4 are compared in order to highlight the many similarities and to discuss some of the fundamental differences thereby clarifying a number of issues that confront structural engineer s who design columns in all three methods of construction. SECTION STRENGTH Thé section stréngth is defined ás the load ánd moment capacity óf a cross-séct ion i.é. The pure moment capacity (zero axial load) is denoted by M uo and the pure axial compressive load capacity (zero moment) is denoted by N uo.
